I am the first attorney general in American history to have held the positions of attorney general and White House counsel. Thus, even while that doesn’t make me unique, it does offer me a different viewpoint on presidential decision-making and the need of choosing a president who upholds the law in order to protect our freedoms and way of life.
The most powerful job in the world is the presidency of the United States. Of course, the limits on that power are provided by our laws, constitution, and establishments like the Congress and the courts. Fundamental justice and accountability are guaranteed by the law. But perhaps the most significant and trustworthy check on abuses of power is the president’s honesty, integrity, and regard for our institutions.
I find it impossible to remain silent as the United States gets ready for a pivotal election and Donald Trump, who poses what may be the worst threat to the rule of law in a generation, considers running for office again. That’s why, despite being a Republican, I’ve chosen to back Kamala Harris in her presidential campaign.
Former U.S. Attorney General and President’s Counsel Alberto R. Gonzales endorsed Kamala Harris in a Politico opinion post. Gonzales was a member of the George W. Bush administration. Gonzales added, “It is telling… that several senior officials who worked for [Trump] in the White House now refuse to support him.” These people include the vice president, chief of staff, national security adviser, defense secretary, and secretary of defense. “Their reluctance to support their former boss is as much of a character as their numerous criminal indictments.”
