Christchurch, the biggest city on the South Island of New Zealand, is a well-liked destination for almost everybody visiting the nation. Massive earthquakes that struck the city between 2010 and 2012 caused extensive damage, hundreds of deaths, and thousands of injuries, but the city has since recovered and thrived.
With a population of slightly less than 400,000, this small city is full with hip cafes, funky pubs, and tons of fresh, modern eateries. While it is true that there aren’t many things to see and do in this city, that doesn’t imply it is uninteresting and should be avoided. There is a bustling nightlife, interesting museums, and a plenty of green area for hiking or lazing around in. It’s a laid-back location ideal for spending a few days wandering and observing the pace of local life.
This is my selection of Christchurch’s top hotels to assist you in making travel plans:
1. Carnmore Hotel
This contemporary, chic four-star hotel is situated in Central/City-Centre, the heart of the city, and is easily walkable to the majority of the attractions. The on-site bar and café open early and provide wonderful food that is produced locally, however breakfast is not included. The rooms feature a basic, minimalist style, bright wallpaper, and ample space. Every room has a plenty of natural light and seems brand new. The rooms have a desk, air conditioning, TV, coffee/tea maker, and comfortable beds. There’s also great water pressure in the showers. Stay here if you want to be right in the middle of it all.
2. The Observatory Hotel
If you’re seeking to spend big and stay downtown, this opulent five-star hotel is housed in a grand, old edifice that used to be an actual observatory. There are just 33 rooms in this opulent boutique hotel, and each one has vibrant décor and antique furnishings. The hotel has a warm, rustic vibe thanks to its exposed brick walls and hardwood flooring; the lounge is especially gorgeous. The hotel seems historic and comfortable.
With very comfy beds, coffee/tea makers, Bluetooth speakers, luxury bath items, and plush bathrobes, the rooms (and bathrooms) are spacious and airy. Free parking is available, along with an on-site fitness center and a complementary continental breakfast that is offered every morning in the lobby. Not to mention, the popular (and highly recommended) Canterbury Museum is only a five-minute walk away.
3. Pavilions Hotel
Situated in the trendy Merivale neighborhood to the north of City-Centre, this hotel offers simple, budget-friendly accommodations that are tidy and cozy. Large, modern rooms with smart TVs, mini fridges, and spacious workspaces are featured in its sleek, modern design. This four-star establishment features two restaurants and a morning buffet breakfast (which is not included). A modest exercise facility, sauna, and heated outdoor pool are also available.
The bathrooms are spacious, the shower has decent water pressure, the beds are comfortable, and the rooms are all wide and well-lit. Larger family rooms are available for those traveling, and free parking is a big bonus for anyone doing a road trip.
4. The Mayfair
Situated on the southern boundary of the expansive Hagley Park, this elegant five-star hotel exudes sophistication. This place is clean and modern. The simplistic design is excellent. Bright and airy, the rooms come equipped with a desk, minibar, walk-in shower, coffee/tea maker, flat-screen TV, and superior soundproofing. The on-site bar and café are great, and although breakfast is not included, it is excellent and has a lot of fresh, local food. Try to reserve a room with one of the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
5. Chateau on the Park
This four-star hotel is located on the eastern edge of Riccarton, west of Hagley Park. It is surrounded by lovely gardens and is a short five-minute drive from downtown. The hotel has a modern interior design and features a simple but contemporary décor. Rooms are bright and spacious, with desks, coffee/tea makers, flat-screen TVs, and large bathrooms. The beds are also incredibly comfortable. The property is an extremely picturesque property with beautiful architecture, looking like a cross between a rustic lodge and a charming mansion.
If you drive, parking is available for free. In addition, there is an extensive breakfast buffet at the restaurant and bar on the premises, along with a fitness facility and an outdoor swimming pool.
6. Dyers House
Set in a magnificent century-old Edwardian-style house, this quaint B&B is spacious and light-filled, with rooms that open to patios or the tranquil garden; some have views of the hills nearby; the owners are particularly friendly and helpful, going above and beyond to ensure that you have a memorable stay; the included breakfast is delicious, with lots of fresh fruit and pastries, and the dining room itself has lovely views of the surrounding area.

A major destination on virtually any journey around New Zealand’s South Island is Christchurch. Even though it’s a little city, there’s enough to do for a few days of activities (particularly if you like being outside).
