International students can apply for the fully funded Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2025–2026. Scholarships for master’s and doctoral courses are available. This scholarship offers a stipend of £18,744 per year, health insurance, up to £2,000 in aid for academic growth, and up to £15,612 in family allowance.
The largest single donation ever made to a UK university, the Gates Cambridge Scholarship Program was launched in October 2000 with a US$ 210 million gift to the University of Cambridge from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
In order to enable outstanding individuals from outside the United Kingdom to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject offered by the University of Cambridge, Gates Cambridge will award 80 full-cost scholarships in 2024. PhD students will be eligible for about two thirds of these scholarships; there will be about 25 awards available in the US round and 55 in the international round.

Family allowance (2022–23 rate): up to £10,944 for one child and up to £15,612 for two or more. A partner receives no funding. Fieldwork: If you are conducting fieldwork for your PhD, you may be eligible to maintain your regular maintenance stipend during that time. Other fieldwork expenses should be covered by the University Composition Fee, not by the Trust. If necessary, you can apply for maternity/paternity financing, which allows you to pause your studies for up to six months while still receiving your maintenance allowance. Funding for hardship – for unanticipated challenges the student faces.
