The United States government formally charged Iran on Monday with hacking into the campaign of Donald Trump.
The FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released a joint statement stating that Iran is the country that the intelligence community believes is responsible for the recently revealed hack and leak against the Trump campaign.
“The [Intelligence Community] is certain that the Iranians have attempted to obtain access to people who have intimate knowledge of the presidential campaigns of both political parties through social engineering and other means. The statement stated, “Such activities, including thefts and disclosures, are intended to influence the U.S. election process.” It’s crucial to remember that this strategy is not brand-new. These strategies have been used by Iran and Russia in other nations as well as in the US throughout this and previous federal election cycles.
In a statement issued through its Permanent Mission to the UN, the Iranian government refuted the charge.
“Such accusations lack credibility and are unfounded. The Islamic Republic of Iran, as we have stated before, has no desire or intention to meddle in the US presidential election. The email statement to TechCrunch stated, “Should the U.S. government genuinely believe in the validity of its claims, it should furnish us with the pertinent evidence—if any—to which we will respond accordingly.”
In response to a number of in-depth queries on Tuesday morning, a representative for the Iranian mission to the UN stated that the ambassador was “still in bed and starting to wake up” but did not immediately reply.
The Trump campaign was hacked, and Politico was the first to announce on August 10 that someone going by the name “Robert” had contacted the news website with papers purportedly taken from the campaign. Subsequently, The New York Times and The Washington Post disclosed that they had received what appeared to be identical materials and had been approached by the same individual.
